HDNET fights and affliction partnership

Affliction MMA and HDNet today announced a deal to air live mixed martial arts action exclusively on the premium cable/satellite network.

The deal calls for HDNet to air the live lead-ins to Affliction’s pay-per-view (PPV) events — similar to the way Fox Sports Network aired the Vitor Belfort vs. Terry Martin and the Gary Goodridge vs. Paul Buentello bouts prior to the Affliction: “Banned” event last month.

HDNet is already one of the top dogs when it comes to covering mixed martial arts. It has a very popular weekly program titled “Inside MMA,” which airs on Friday nights. In addition, the network covers numerous events from organizations such as Strikeforce, Adrenaline MMA, DREAM and others.

This partnership is another step in the right direction for both parties on the road to success. Here’s a snip from Andrew Simon, CEO of HDNet Fights:

“This is the beginning of a long-term partnership with Affliction that encompasses live MMA, co-marketing and top fighters for the top weekly show in MMA - Inside MMA on HDNet. Affliction has quickly become one of the top organizations in MMA which means it is a must have for HDNet.”

To kick this thing off, HDNet will air the first 90 minutes of Affliction: “Day of Reckoning” live from the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on October 11. The fights that will be featured on the telecast are a welterweight showdown between Jason High and Mike Pyle followed by a heavyweight tilt between Paul Buentello and Roy Nelson.

Bas Rutten, Kenny Rice and Ron Kruck will handle the play by play duties for the HDNet portion, which is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. ET.

i think Espn’s MMA Live kinda made Inside MMA irrelevant imo. i still wish i could get hd-net though. i called my cable provider, and they had never heard of it. oh-well.

I don’t know how they can expect a long-term partnership when Affliction will be belly-up by the end of the year. Dana said so.

If Dana White told you the world was flat would you believe it? Probably.

Poor gullible “MMA” (UFC) fan boys. Not appreciating the sport as a whole and merely the most visible promotion.

You’re only hurting yourselves by hanging on ever one of White’s words and not watching/supporting or verbally promoting other promotions.

If White REALLY loved MMA, he’d welcome healthy competition, not insult it. Competition makes the sport better.

What good is this fragmentation. I want one organization that has all the best fighters. Dana runs the ufc so why would he want competition and how is not liking a rival org prove he doesn’t like mma.

One organization doesn’t have all the best fighters, it never has and it never will. Why? Because the UFC is cheap and won’t pay the best to fight the best. That’s why Huerta complained, that’s why Babalu and Arlovski are elsewhere, that’s why Fedor couldn’t come to ‘terms’ with the UFC.

I don’t think Dana is the only person who said that Affliction looks like it will fold. Even the owner said it would fold if he did’t see any money after the third event, and my guess would be that they bled money for the first event.

No, one organization doesn’t have all the best fighters. And you’re right, it never will. But it’s a business, it can’t pay every fighter a million bucks per fight. kevin put up a good post on fighter pay before. Huerta complained b/c he’s either an idiot or got very bad advice, he doesn’t have the star power to demand more. Babalu (I might be mistaken on this) is gone b/c of the extended choke he put on his last UFC opponent after the fight was stopped. Now as to why Arlovski is gone, who knows? They should have resigned him, but he never looked the same after Sylvia beat him.

Dana once said he plans on having a card every two weeks. He would need an expanded roster to do that. I think the natural evolution for the sport would have all the fighters fighting under one promotion, like the NFL and football. Maybe a fighters’ union. Soon the ufc will be so huge that any new promotion will just accept that it has to try to become a niche player like arena football does with the nfl.

Not really. Actually to me, ESPN”s MMA live is what I find kinda irrelevant. I have Inside MMA set to record every week and I watch it on Friday night or Saturday morning. They talk about MUCH more than the UFC on that show.

Acttually, the way I would put it, is if you are only a UFC fan, then watch ESPN’s MMA live. IF you watch more than the UFC, then watch MMA live.

ALSO, MMA LIVE made this announcement on thier last episode, or possibly even the episode before that…

I also have InsideMMA set to record on my DVR. MMA Live is ok too i guess? Affliction mixing and matching the same boring fighters is lame! Ill watch I guess, if I have nothing else to do.

Yeah, I have watched most episodes of it, but not all. I only watch them at work in a small little portion of my nice monitor. I don’t go on the internet to often at my house. I would prefer to watch a TV show with my wife then sit there staring at my laptop, lol.

Plus MMA Live is only 1/2 hour and Inside MMA is 1 hour. They have 3 guests that are there for the whole show - they are usually fighters or mma writers or promotors, or, you catch my drift. I like how they show the highlights of all the other organizations from the previous week. That is where you can really find out about some young up and comers.

Yes, MMA live does cover other orgs, but they do mainly concentrate on UFC in my opinion. Insede MMA’s program has majority coverage of UFC only the week of a PPV, and still its not even 1/2 of the coverage. But I could also understand how some people can sometimes find Bas to be somewhat annoying.

If MMA Live ever makes it to television, that will for sure be set to record on my DVR as well. I prefer to watch stuff on a big flat screen on my wall as opposed to a computer screen. If I didn’t have freinds to chip in for all of the PPV’s I probably wouldn’t be able to afford all of them, so I would possibly have to resort to watching them online. Actually, I would go to the bar so I can still see it live and on a TV screen. But luckily, that will never be the case.

mma live airs on thursdays at 4pm central time on espn internet. i never get the chance to watch it live, but always catch the replay on mania. if they dont have it, you know where to go. mma live talks about the ufc, affliction, elite, dream, sengoku etc. i dont know were the notion that they only talk about the ufc came from, plus they have kenny florian and frank mir as commentators. i quit watching replays of inside mma the day they had rowdy roddy piper (who i like) as a guest commentator. he didnt have a clue.

they did at one time like you said, but was just a rumor that it could happen in the future. hopefully now with all this randy/brock buzz, it will become reality. like PHILNQY and i discussed once, you would think that espn would at least have 1 hr a week to spare, even on the duece.

Well Affliction is going about it the wrong way.
First off, the ring sucks; I know if your a pride fan boy then your goin to say the ring is better even when you no its not.
I loved Pride, but the ring is just laughably bad for MMA.
Also, putting Metal bands in with your shows is just ignorant marketing.

They’re fights were okay. but the production values were questionable.

I like competition,I like watching other Orgs, and having more fights to watch.
But UFC just does it the best right now.
It seems like the people who rally behind it were the ones who were involved in the Pride VS UFC thing and are just bitter and rally behind any competition.

Affliction is a T-shirt company that does fights on the side to sell more shirts. This isn’t our new prideFC savior guys.

Shaiz:

As the biggest Pride lover in the history of mma, I can say for certain that Affliction and Pride aree completely different. No one is claiming that Affliction is the new Pride because DREAM is.

The reason people rally behind affliction is because competition is good for the sport. Because of Afflictions arrival on the scene, the UFC has increased its product. THere has only been one affliction show so far and that already led to more UFC events, more free events.

Affliction has already provided us with a dream fight between Sylvia and Fedor which the UFC could never deliver.

Now they are giving us another MONSTER match up between 2 top 5 Heavyweights: Barnett vs. Arlovski and the winner will fight Fedor at the next show!

Three MEGA fights that we will have never gotten to see had it not been for the arrival of Affliction!

Hey John,

I don’t know if Fedor fighting Sylvia was a ‘dream match up’ but its definately nice seeing Fedor fight someone legit.

I think the dream match up is Fedor vrs Randy, and if that happens it will be in the UFC.

I like Barnett Arlovski, but i don’t think I’d call it a megafight.

Any fight with Fedor and anyone competitive is a Mega fight.
I think Afflictions PPV’s are gonna suffer unless Fedor is involved.
Much the same way elitexc’s ppvs suffer without Kimbo or Gina.
(Please Forgive me for comparing Kimbo to Fedor)

agreed, good points john… these affliction haters are ridiculous and dont understand competition in the market. when there is little or no competition for a product (MMA) the product decreases in quality and prices rise… economics 101, if affliction wasnt here you think the UFC would have given an anderson silva fight up for free? no way… u guys need to appreciate the other organizations
